The Chronophage Clock
Summer 2008
Unveiled by Professor Stephen Hawking in September 2008, the Chronophage is a huge gold-plated clock on the exterior of Corpus Christi College's new library building. It was commissioned as a tribute to the inventor of the grasshopper mechanism, the way in which almost all analogue clocks and watches operate.
Valued at over £1million, this amazing timepiece is protected from the elements (and the public) by a thick sheet of toughened glass, so we were called in by the architect to install a discreet PA system to make sure the ticking and chiming could be heard by the enthralled onlookers.
It is a fantastic spectacle – click on the picture to find out more and to see it on video.
